Do you like vintage home items?
I don’t know what your favorite type of home decor is, but mine is somewhere minimalistic yet cozy (nothing like Kim K’s house). Basically, it’s very Parisian chic, with a lot of white and wood. My husband says that our house looks like it belonged to a stylish 80-year-old because a lot of our home items are vintage, but I can’t help it: I like old things way too much.
Speaking of that, I believe that there’s something special about a house that’s filled with all sorts of items; they’re like tiny treasures that bring you joy and comfort. If you feel like one of your rooms is lacking something, all it needs is a beautiful and simple item that will make a huge difference.
As you can probably guess, I’m all about vintage furniture because these home items add a lot of warmth, coziness, and personality to any area. However, this doesn’t mean that everything in your home should be antique, because that’s not easy, especially if you want everything to match.
So if you want some home items that feel special, that have history, and that will give a vintage feel to your decor, or if you simply want to save money and buy second-hand furniture, this article is for you. Without further ado, never buy these 7 home items brand new!
1. Dining table
You sure need a dining table in your household, since it’s the place where you get together with your family, enjoy a delicious and cozy meal, talk about how your day went, and maybe even get together for a cup of coffee in the morning.
Unfortunately, this home item can be pretty expensive, and with today’s fast furniture, you might pay a lot of money for a piece that won’t last you more than 2-3 years. Of course, if you’re one of those people who like to change their home decor a lot, that might not be a problem for you.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a statement piece—one that has a history behind it and something unique—that will make your dining area feel special, then I suggest you buy vintage.
Not only is this home item going to be the perfect piece for your room, but it will also be of higher quality and more affordable, so check out the flea markets in your city and you are surely going to find the perfect object for you.
2. Art pieces
Do you love having art pieces at home? I think they’re wonderful! They look amazing and can make any room feel luxurious and sophisticated! If you’re looking for the perfect home item to add a little bit of an artsy touch to your rooms, don’t go for something new.
Instead, explore the flea markets in your area and go to all the antique stores nearby, and I guarantee you that you’ll find an amazing art piece! A painting, for instance, will look wonderful everywhere, from hanging on a small wall to lying on bookshelves and console tables in your living room—it will add a little sweetness to any room.
3. Rugs
Some people prefer having big rugs at home that cover the entire surface and keep the furniture and TV station on top of them. However, I think that floor-length rugs are harder to maintain since they have things on top of them, and besides that, it will also be harder for you to keep your floor clean.
Whether you prefer huge rugs or want to stick to small ones that you can only put in front of your couch or any other parts you need a little extra, don’t go to the store and get a new one. A vintage rug is going to be the perfect home item since it’s more affordable, prettier, and also of higher quality. And not to mention, there are a ton of styles and colors you could choose from, so that’s amazing!
4. Footstools
A footstool isn’t a mandatory home item, but it’s still nice to have one that can hold your clothes, your feet when you’re tired and you want to watch some TV while laying in your chair, and maybe your magazines when you want to read something.
Even though this is a very tiny thing, it can be pretty expensive if you want to buy it brand new. However, if you really want a house item like this, you can check out the vintage stores in your area and look for a footstool you like. Another thing to consider is to look through Facebook Marketplace, Craiglist, and any other platforms where people sell their belongings.
5. Chest furniture
Do you like chest furniture? I think they’re pretty great for everything, from storing decor items to serving as storage space. You can put this home item in your living room and then place your TV station on top of it, or a flower vase and some coffee table books, or maybe even a painting and some framed photographs.
It’s a versatile furniture piece, and I’m pretty sure that you’ll use it in many ways. From the entryway to a hallway, in your living room, or in your bedroom, it will look just as fine. However, don’t spend a lot of money on a new one when you can rather get one from a flea market, vintage boutique, or Facebook Marketplace.
If its size is good and it fits your needs, you should get it even if the color is not the one that you’d like. You can go to your nearest shop or on Amazon to find wood paint and give your chest a quick makeover. If you prefer vintage-looking things, this paint is the one that you need.
6. Books
Reading is one of my favorite things to do. It makes me feel like I’m out of this world, and I can focus on someone else’s story, living the same things as them, going through a lot, trying, making mistakes, succeeding, and so on. And if it happens that I don’t like something or get bored, I simply close the book and pick up where I left off the next time.
So if you’re like me and you’re looking for a way to turn your bookcase into a magical library, go for vintage books because they’re more affordable, have an interesting old smell, and you might be lucky and find some old but gold editions. Besides that, they add warmth and coziness to any room.
7. Chairs
I have no idea if you’re following any decor trends or not, but I noticed that people don’t like things that come in sets anymore. I saw a lot of pictures on Pinterest and social media that showed living rooms and dining areas, and the chairs weren’t matchy-matchy, as I was expecting.
So if you want to give your home a playful and modern touch, go for some vintage chairs that will become the stars of your decor. Whether you’re lucky and get an entire set for a reasonable price or you simply get more distinct chairs and mix and match them (different colors look absolutely divine, so don’t be afraid to try), you’ll have a result that you’re going to love.
These home items might be more durable compared to the fast furniture you typically get in any store, and if there’s something that you don’t like, such as the color or the lining, you can simply DIY them and you’ll have a whole different product in the end.
