5. A small supply of water and non-perishable goods

It is always a good idea to have a small supply of food and water on hand, just in case. During the long and cold winters, you might get stuck inside for a few days, and it would be ideal to have some water and some food.

First of all, try to have some bottled water. Follow the straightforward guideline of 1 gallon per day, per person, to try to obtain a 3-day supply. This provides you with a half gallon of liquid per person per day for drinking and the other half for cleaning.

Now, when you want to keep food, you need to buy stuff that is non-perishable. The best foods you can have are dried fruits, canned meats and veggies, peanut butter, powdered milk, and cereal. Also, if you want to keep bread, remember that it goes bad fast. The good part is that if you freeze it, it will be fresh for much longer.
