8 Mistakes Women Over 50 Should Avoid

1. Over-accessorizing

We all know how important accessories are and how they have the power to elevate a boring outfit. However, over-accessorizing can easily do the opposite. When you opt for too many necklaces, oversized earrings, and belts all at once, it doesn’t look classy, it looks extremely chaotic.

So, if you want to have that effortlessly looking vibe, balance is the key to success. The best would be to choose a maximum of 3 statement pieces and let them shine. Women over 50 should embrace the art of minimalism, especially when it comes to accessorizing. A few high-quality pieces are all you need to make a statement.

2. Wearing too many logos

If you are a name-brand lover, make sure to limit the amount of things you are wearing with logos to 1 or 2 per look. Don’t get me wrong! You can invest in high-end designer pieces, but trust me, flashy logos or brand names, can easily turn a chic outfit into a disaster.

Subtlety is key. So, if you love designer pieces, you should always opt for classic items like leather handbags or well-made shoes. The goal should be to appear polished and refined, not like a walking billboard for a brand.

3. Wearing wrinkled clothing

Don’t get me wrong, you shouldn’t stress over every little wrinkle! It’s hard to prevent every one of them. For example, there’s nothing you can do when your clothes wrinkle because of your body position. Don’t worry about those! I’m focusing on the places where wrinkles don’t usually happen!

In my case, a wrinkle-release spray in my car and a professional streamer are life savers. Each time I travel I make sure to have my streamer with me. Even though it took me a while to adapt, using it is way easier than I imagined. In just a few seconds I can easily adjust my look. But, be careful! Some items can’t go without a good stream. Here they are: fabric belts, collars, cuffs, blouses, and t-shirts.

Wrinkled clothing destroys your look, making you look extremely cheap.

Here is the best wrinkle spray I tried so far. I can’t recommend it enough. So, make sure to try it and let me know what you think, in the comment section found below.

4. Scratched sunglasses

It might sound funny, but trust me, no one likes to see those annoying scratches on sunglasses. If they are too obvious, you should immediately stop wearing the glasses and opt for another pair, or maybe another kind of accessory. It doesn’t matter how expensive or cheap your sunglasses are, you should never wear them if they are scratched.

It may seem insignificant, but it’s not. A small detail like this can easily ruin the look. So, remember to always store your sunglasses properly and protect them as much as you can. Finding a good cleaner is also an important step. So, make sure to pay attention to it.

5. Wearing clothes that don’t fit properly

Nothing is worse than clothes that don’t fit as they should. If your pants are too long, or your dress is too tight, your entire outfit will be ruined, making you look cheap and not chic. Fit is everything.

If your size and measurements represent a problem, a great tailor would be a lifesaver and make a $50 piece look like a $500 one.

Another thing you can do is shop for your body type. Know exactly which are the models that suit your proportions. Find brands that are designed for your shape, because this way, you will instantly make your outfit look polished.

6. Choosing cheap fabrics

I know how tempting it can be to buy everything at a discounted price. But, most of the time, it’s not a good idea. You should invest in some basic items that can elevate any look. Oh, and that is not all! Fast fashion is also a huge problem we are facing.

All the fast fashion items are made with low-quality materials and are often designed not to last for too long. So, for women over 50, wearing too many cheap and trendy items is a waste of money and will make you feel less refined and more desperate for attention.

Remember to always focus on high-quality pieces that will last longer.

7. Impulse buying without a plan

Shopping without a plan is a huge trap! Most of the time when I go shopping without a clear plan in my mind, I end up purchasing a lot of things I don’t really need. Impulse shopping transformed my wardrobe into a “nothing to wear” disaster. Don’t get tricked and always pay attention to the items you are spending your money on. Before buying anything, ask yourself these 3 magic questions:

  • Does this item work with at least three others from my closet?
  • Would I buy this if it weren’t on sale?
  • Will this still be trendy next year?

If the answer is no, walk away and secure your money.

8. Not storing your clothes properly

The way you store your clothes determines the way they look. So, if you want a sophisticated look, always pay attention to storage. Invest in your wardrobe because clothing care should be not neglected. You could be wearing the most chic and expensive outfit, but if your blouse is wrinkled and your shoes are scuffed, everything will fall apart.

Probably, the biggest secrets I’ve learned about looking effortlessly expensive are these:

  • steam or iron your clothes after you wash them
  • store sweaters folded
  • use a fabric shaver on all the pilling sweaters (that are extremely annoying)
  • keep your shoes clean

Last but not least, wear everything with confidence. It is the key to looking expensive. Believe in yourself, stand tall, and own your style like it’s the best in the world. If you don’t trust in yourself, nobody will. So, take the first step now.
