Prepare for the cold weather.
When was the last time you checked your home? I’m talking about all those tiny cracks and holes. You’d be surprised, but it seems that 30% of the air that moves through a home’s duct system wastes away in leaks. The more air you lose, the longer you’ll have to keep the air conditioner or heater running.
We all know what that means: a higher electricity bill. You can spend a whole weekend sealing up those holes and cracks, no matter where they are: around doorways, window frames, and any other spaces and places that might be exposed. Taking care of your home to the last detail could go a long way, especially when it comes to saving money!
Hold off on using the A/C or heater.
The fall months are a wonderful time to give your air conditioner a rest before turning on the heater. Keeping all these systems off for a minimum of one month could help you save a lot of money on electricity and gas bills. It could cost more than $2 per hour just to keep that air conditioner running.
Then, if it gets too warm in your area, a fan might keep you cool without using as much energy. When it cools down again, prepare a blanket or put on a sweater instead of turning on the heater. I know that it sounds off-putting, but that’s genuinely something that I started to consider. I mean, I can warm myself with a blanket just as much, so why spend too much money on heating?
