Free preventive care.

This is probably one of the most important freebies for seniors and retirees that you should keep in mind. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 was the one that set us up for this amazing perk, and you should definitely make the most of it.

The act makes sure that health insurance companies have to cover a number of preventive care methods without making you pay any co-payments or any other deductibles. They have to be included in your policy no matter what, so make sure that you are covered for these as well.

Some of the free services for this type of care include, but are not limited to, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, annual wellness visits, flu shots, and screenings for colorectal and cervical cancer!

Once you are able to get Medicare (meaning you are 65 and older), most of the same preventive care services will be available to you for free as well!

Free eye care.

Speaking of healthcare, there are other freebies for seniors that you should keep an eye on, besides preventative care. Do you feel like you can no longer see as well at a distance? Or maybe you have been wearing glasses already, and it is time for an upgrade.

No matter what the reason is, if you are 65 or older and you have not seen your eye doctor in a while, you should make sure to pay them a visit. Through the American Academy of Ophthalmology, you can do this for free!

The academy has started a program called EyeCare America, where you can sign up for free eye exams. In addition, if during the exam you are diagnosed with any eye disease, they will also cover the care for one year since the diagnosis!

The best thing yet is that there are no costs to pay out of pocket for seniors who use this program, so you should check it out if you are overdue for an eye check!

Free transportation.

Depending on your state and sometimes locality, as a senior, you may be able to ride at no additional cost on most public transport. Given that there are a lot of localities and states that are offering discounts for seniors already, this is one of the freebies for seniors that we have been happy to see enforced by some, as it is an easy way to get around cities without having to rely on a car.

States like Pennsylvania have started programs (the Free Transit Program) that allow all people 65 and older who are residents to ride for free on the trolleys, buses, and rapid transit lines, as long as they are senior citizens who have gotten their transit identification cards (which you can also get for free as a senior).

Michigan also has a similar program, as they have GoldRide Cards available for seniors, and anyone starting the age of 65 can ride the bus for free.

Be it that you live in a city or you are set to visit a new one soon, make sure you check out if the public transit is free for seniors so you can make the most of these deals and not spend more than you need!

As a senior, you may end up having a couple of discount or free cards that you should carry around with you at all times. A great way to avoid overfilling your wallet is to have a cardholder. This one from Amazon is a great, affordable choice!

Free college tuition.

It is never too late to go back to school! And if it has been your dream to go back to college and get your degree or study something that has interested you, know that there are several colleges that offer free tuition for seniors.

Some states that are supporting universities and colleges impose those institutions to offer free college tuition for seniors, effectively leaving the cost for their senior residents as long as there is space in the courses you want to pick up. You should check what your state’s legislature is and if any close by colleges offer this option to you.

Some of the states we can give as examples, where these freebies for seniors are available, include Virginia, where residents over 60 can choose to go to state-backed colleges for free, and Kentucky, with 23 Kentucky colleges on the list that waive tuition for all residents 65 and older, including the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.

One thing to keep in mind is that these programs differ from state to state, and you may either be allowed to audit the course or earn credit, depending on the institution.

Free retirement planning.

Have you made a retirement plan? You may not be a senior yet, or you may not be retired at the moment, so it is never too late to start looking into retirement planning. The good news is that there is someone who can help you with this issue for free if you are approaching this milestone.

While it is not really a senior freebie, it is still something that you can find easily, and you should take advantage of it if you have been trying to figure out when is the best time to retire. The tool you can find on Fidelity is free, and the best thing is that you will not have to pay for it.

As a free tool, you will be able to estimate both your income and expenses as a retiree, and based on those, you can then take a look at the recommended avenues for investment so that you can generate a steady income for yourself as a retiree. Whether it will have annuities or not, the estimate will try to account for any inflation you may have to deal with in the year after.

If you want to make sure that you get the best prices ever, even if they are not for free, you may be interested in knowing what states have the best deals for senior properties! Make sure you read all about the states that have the best prices for homes for retirees here!
