Kirkland Signature Extra Fancy Mixed Nuts
While the United States grows a variety of nuts, mainly walnuts, almonds, pistachios, peanuts, and pecans, Costco imports this common Costco product from at least 20 other nations. Cashews, particularly, are imported from Vietnam and Brazil, which are subject to 46% and 10% tariffs, respectively.
In its Costco Connection magazine, the company even shared a story about how and why they source nuts from so many different areas, stating:
“The sheer volume of cashews that we sell requires us to be sourcing from multiple countries to be able to supply our members. If you have one country that goes through a massive drought and the yield of cashews drops dramatically, if we didn’t have that redundancy of other countries that could supply us, we wouldn’t be able to offer that nut to the member.”
Canned Tomatoes
Imported canned tomatoes from Italy, which is a favorite among many cooks, are facing some major price increases. Costco’s selection of San Marzano tomatoes is especially impacted, making pasta dinners all across the US more expensive.
These tariffs are increasing the cost of production, and suppliers are handing that off to consumers. Some customers might turn to domestic brands, but those don’t always match the rich flavor of the imported sorts. If you use this standard Costco product regularly, stock up or be on the lookout for sales.
